A: jack the car up and make sure that it does not have both, some of these cars do run 2 of them, also make sure that the new ones have the same number of wires coming out of them as the old one's.

Q: My 1997 Honda Civic EX brake light comes on and off for no reason?
Can you tell me why my 1997 Honda Civic EX brake lights keep coming on (like as if I had the emergency brake locked). They come on when I start the car and then go off after driving for a while, but then go on and off, while the brake is never is even on?! Any advice is greatly appreciated! Thanks!!

A: Check the brake fluid level in the master cylinder. There is usually a float inside on most cars. If the level is low, it will trigger the light on the dash especially when stopping and driving or while cornering. You may want to have your brakes checked. When brake pads wear, the fluid level inside the master cylinder will get low.

Q: Are 1997 honda civic dx known to have alot of electrical problems and have there ever been any recalls ?
My daughter has a 1997 honda civic dx and has had electrical problems fixed numerous times. Now she can't play the factory installed cd player, turn the windshield wipers and the signal light on at the same time. The cd player will stop playing and the speedometer hand goes haywire.

A: I do remember hearing about the electrical starter switch, or starter something. I have a 2000 civic myself, and no problems yet. I did look up re-calls and I would also have your local mechanic check for you as well. You night have to have things re-wired all together . Sounds like someone messed it up, or things are short circuiting.

Q: 1997 Honda Civic manual transmission - repair, replace or junk?
I have a 97 Honda Civic DX manual shift with just under 140k miles that the transmission is going in. My mechanic has suggested replacing the transmission with a used one over rebuilding (due to costs). I am trying to decide if it is worth putting all this money into a older car. What do you think, I am torn about what to do? Is it time to get rid of it before I have other problems or should I fix it up as best I can?

A: At 140k miles this car is still young, a used transmission is a good idea. Find one from a salvage yard that will give you a replacement warranty, check around some only give like if not work when installed they will exchange, some will give a longer warranty. Ask you mechanic what warranty he can get/give you for the replacement tranny. If wanting to trade remember about having a monthly car payment to make, are/can you afford to do that? If cost is that big of a factor it may be best to keep this car and get the little problems fixed.

Q: How do you put on a rear bumper on a 1997 Honda Civic?
What tools do you need? Would you recommend a mechanic(*How much can you expect for a mechanic to charge for this?) to do it or is it something easy to do and you can do yourself. BTW, im talking about the rear Honda civic bumper cover. Sorry alot of questions but my bumper got messed up and I want to fix it asap. Thanks!

A: the bumper is very easy to replace all you will need is a 10mm and a 12mm socket and wrench open you trunk and pull back the carpet on both sides on the back side of the trunk you will see the bolts.. after that look under the rear of your car and you will see 5 or 6 plastic screws i thing for that you will need a flat head screw driver but the always stick so you should have a pair of vise grips to hold the topside of them that's about all

Q: will the wheels from a 1996 honda accord fit a 1997 honda civic?
Will the wheels from a 1996 honda accord fit a 1997 honda civic

A: If your talking about stock wheels, the answer is no. A 97 Civic has a bolt pattern of 4 x 100. A 96 Accord has a bolt pattern of 4 x 114. The sizes are the same for both coupes and sedans. Some after market wheels have multiple lug holes so they can fit additional makes.

Q: Where can I find Wheels/Tires for a 1997 Honda civic EX?
I really really have to find 4 tires for my Dad's Honda civic EX, 1997. If I find these tires for fairly cheap he will buy me a cell phone :O! Searched craigslist and got nothing, google doesn't help much either... P185/65R14

A: Sam's Club...if you don't have a membership it'd be worth it to purchase one. I would recommend going with BF Goodrich, I have them on my civic and they are excellent. They also come with a 70,000 mile warranty (unless you live in NY) Sam's Club will honor EVERYTHING, if anything goes wrong with the tires from your basic driving they will cover you

Q: How long should I expect my 1997 Honda Civic to last?
My first car, has 120,000 miles on it, needs new transmission, clutch, hatchback leak seal, and general mainteance to the tune of $2500. Wondering if I should go ahead and repair it, or is it time to shop for a new car? Any experience with Honda Civics out there? Also, I'm a pretty thrifty person..I don't care about a shiny new car. Just want reliability. Surprise, yes_its_me, the car has been regularly maintained...except for oil changes, I bring it to the dealer every time.

A: you can blow a lot of money on all the necessary repairs to get it going in good condition. it may seem like a large blow in your wallet now, but it is all worth it in the long run. the engines on these cars do last a long time. once you get all the major repairs out of the way, don't feel bad about spending a little here and there for daily maintenance (oil change, tune ups, tire maintenance, etc.) i drive an 87 4 cylinder toyota, and it has almost 400k miles on it. i bet if you really care about the car, it'll go up to 500k.

Q: How much should a transmission replacement cost for a 1997 Honda Civic?
Thanks for the responses and advice. I found a replacement with 77k miles on it and I think we'll go with it. The killer cost is the labor -- total for the replacement and labor will total $1500!!! Trying to negotiate lower...

Q: i have a 1997 honda civic, the car speeds up & slows down or stalls while im driving, what is the problem ?
i have 1997 honda civic automatic, the speedometer jumps up high and the car speeds up or slows down as if pressing on the brakes while i still have my foot on the accelerator, when i come to a complete stop and try to accelerate again it kinda stalls and then speeds up, it goes crazy when the car is changing gears but im not sure what kind of problem i have... ? can anyone help me figure out what the problem is please ?

A: Sounds like a fuel pump problem. As an electric fuel pump starts to go bad, it will often shudder on acceleration or on minimal inclines. The best way to check is to install an inline fuel pressure guage and run the engine to see if you've got large fluctuations in the fuel pressure. If the pump is going bad, it can be tested with an electric meter, however I think your model has the fuel pump inside the gas tank, which means you've got to remove the tank completely from the car to access the fuel pump.

Q: What is the procedure to pull a center console radio bezel 1997 honda civic?
It was trashed it while trying to (and succeeding) in lifting my radio. ; /

A: you probably need the scans from the service manual to see what to do because the answer is a bit too much to detail without pictures. if you want me to send you a scan of the center dash removal then click on the icon above my name that is to the left of this answer then click on the 'email' ling in the upper right of the profile page. send me an email and include your regular email address in the text of the email (such as joe1234@yahoo.com) I need the email as Yahoo Answers does not allow a file attachement. also, doing it this way keeps your email address and mine out of the searchable yahoo answers database. let me know if you want the scans hope that helps

Q: What do I need to do to my 1997 Honda Civic?
I've had it for about a year and all i've done is get an oil change. I don't know what im suppose to do to maintain my car! What am i suppose to look out for or change?

A: It all depends on what the current mileage is on the vehicle and what the maintenance history was before you got the car. on the 97 the owners manual called for: oil changes every 3750 miles fluid inspections, safety inspections, tire pressrue adjustment etc every 3750 miles tire rotation every 7500 miles clean and adjust brakes every 7500 miles air filter every 15000 miles spark plugs every 30000 miles valve adjustment every 30000 miles transmission oil change every 60000 miles timing belt every 90000 miles (water pump, coolant and other drive belts are changed when the timing belt is changed) distributor cap and rotor as necessary but usually every 100,000 by far the most critical adjustment in terms of the performance and fuel economy on that car is the valve adjustment. that is certainly one thing you'll want to do the fuel filter is in the gas tank and doen't require replacement use the above as a guide to what you should do. if you don't know what was done before you got the car, divide the mileage by each of the intervals (3750, 7500, 15000, 30,000, 60,000, 90,000) and you'll be able to see what you're due for hope that helps

Q: How to change out guages on a 1997 honda civic lx?
I have a 97 civic lx I want to change out the dull boring lights for new glowing ones. If I bought a set on ebay, how hard is it to change out? any ideas?

A: Replaced mine from ebay with no problems, then I've got 30+ years of working on cars. Both my kids pulled their the dash out of their own cars and replaced them with the glowing dash boards on their Honda's in a couple hours and a screwdriver and they have no experience. They look really great, and aren't that hard, my opinion, well worth the money. Bests, Terry
