Q: 2003 Honda Odyssey Synthetic oil or Conventional?
We are the 2nd owners of a 2003 Honda Odyssey and need to change the oil. We do not know what type or brand of oil has been used in the van previously. We bought the honda filter from the dealer and we know it needs 5W-20 but I keep getting conflicting information. The dealership said use conventional oil but I am told synthetic is better for the life of the engine. We plan to change our own oil. Just concerned about what oil to put back in it since we don't know what's been run through it.

A: I have no clue where the person above gets oil changed but new car dealers in Up State NY will change your oil for less than $24.00. I'll also take issue with the totally untrue statement that you can't ever change back from full synthetic to regular motor oil. In a small high temperature gasoline engine full synthetic 5W-20 motor oil will allow the engine to spin over faster on cold Winter mornings. A greater volume of oil reaches critical engine parts faster. More volume of oil cools frictional surfaces more efficiently. To preserve my new car warranty I lug in my own Mobil1 and let the Toyota dealer change it for $22.00. As soon as 60,000 miles rolls around yours truly will be changing the oil in this car. Actually what I just said can be misleading. Any one can change their own oil even on a new car. The trick is proving with dated receipts for the oil and filter every time you do it! This is necessary should you ever have an engine issue.

Q: How do I get better mileage with my 2003 Honda Odyssey?
I am supposed to get 23 mpg but for the past few weeks I've kept track of how much gas my van is consuming and it comes out to just around 15.5 mpg. With two kids I drive around a lot and need some good tips to increase my mileage before I break the bank.

A: Artemis, There are a lot of factors that could affect fuel consumption. You could probably achieve 23mpg if your Honda's still brand new. The best way for you to increase your mileage is to have your engine properly tuned and maintained periodically, check tire pressures, use airconditioning sparingly if possible, remove unnecessary heavy things inside your vehicle and check on your driving habits. These are little things that will help increase mileage for any vehicle. Don't entertain fuel saving gadgets because they're all crap. Lest if LPG conversion Kits are available from there. That's a sure way to put more of your income in the bank. Whatever you decide on what approach to take, to save fuel, it will be hard to achieve 23mpg again, but if you're able to achieve19 to 20mpg on an Odyssey, that wouldn't be too bad.

Q: 2003 Honda Odyssey radiator draincock location?
I bought a used 2003 Honda Odyssey EX and tried to change the radiator coolant by myself because the test shows it is not good. I jacked the van up and looked for a draincock under the radiator, but nowhere I could find it. Someone suggested that I should remove the undercover, so I did it, but still I could not find anything like that. Can anyone help me find the Honda Odyssey radiator draincock?

A: There should be a plastic skirt covering the bottom of the radiator. On that skirt is a square panel about 4"x4". Pry that open and the draincock is there. 1- with car running set the heaters to maxium heat then turn off the car. 2-remove the radiator cap 3- open the draincock 4-You need to open the drainbolt on the side of the engine near the rear of the engine. 5-after the coolant stops coming out here is the refill instructions. Engine Coolant Refill Capacity [including the reservoir capacity of 0.6 L (0.06 US qt., 0.5 Imp qt) ] Without rear A/C: 5.5 L (5.8 US qt., 4.8 Imp qt.) With rear A/C: 7.5 L (7.9 US qt., 6.6 Imp qt.) -Start the engine. Hold the engine speed at 1,500 rpm until it warms up (the radiator fan comes on at twice). Make sure the thermostat is open. Turn off the engine. Check the level in the radiator, and add Antifreeze/Coolant Type 2, if needed. -Set the temperature control dial to minimum. Start the engine. Hold the engine speed at 1,500 rpm for 5 minutes , then turn off the engine. Check the level in the radiator, and add Antifreeze/Coolant Type 2, if needed. -Set the temperature control dial to maximum. Start the engine. Hold the engine speed at 1,500 rpm for 5 minutes , then turn off the engine. Check the level in the radiator, and add Antifreeze/Coolant Type 2, if needed. -Set the temperature control dial to minimum. Start the engine. Hold the engine speed at 1,500 rpm for 3 minutes , then turn off the engine. Check the level in the radiator, and add Antifreeze/Coolant Type 2, if needed. -Set the temperature control dial to maximum. Start the engine. Hold the engine speed at 1,500 rpm for 3 minutes , then turn off the engine. Check the level in the radiator, and add Antifreeze/Coolant Type 2, if needed. -Repeat above steps until the coolant level dose not change in the radiator, then install the radiator cap loosely. Set the temperature control dial to minimum. Start the engine. Hold the engine speed at 2,500 rpm for 1 minute. -Turn heat to maximum and run for 2-3 minutes. Ensure you do not hear coolant running through the heater or engine. if you do you must repeat the above steps again. These steps must be perormed as stated to prevent air pockets that can cause steam build up which can cause overheating and engine damage. Good luck

Q: Does anyone know the factory measurement between the side rails on a 2003 Honda Odyssey?
Looking to get a new roof rack system but can't find an accurate width between the siderails. Yes, I can measure it but I want to get the factory measurements.

A: the original installation instructions for the 2003 doesn't give the dimensions of the cross bars but it does note that the front bar is "slightly longer" than the rear cross bar that is "slightly shorter". the only help I can offer is to send you a scan of the install instructions which show the mounting points and the positions of the rails but there is no measurements on those instructions as to how long either the front or rear bars are. if you want the original install instructions send me an email that includes your regular email address for me to send the scan to. hope that helps

Q: 2003 Honda Odyssey will not start - no power at all?
On several occasions, the electrical system has died after openning the vehicle and then trying to start it. In the past it has come back from the dead, but today, no luck. The battery is fine and new. The problem is that the whole system is gone and then it comes back after a few minutes to an hour. Cables are tight. Fuses are good too.

A: lose battery cable (red cable positive) and (black cable negative)

Q: my 2003 honda odyssey is surging when at idle and the check engine and tcs lights are on.?
the van has 112,000 miles and has recently had the timing belt replaced.

A: Check for DTC P1129 and P0505. If both are present, or the idle fluctuates, replace the IAC valve. also could be clogged e.g.r. ports, without the codes i couldn't tell you much... there are too many ... these are just the most common

Q: How hard is it to change the fuel filter on a 2003 Honda Odyssey?

A: DO NOT try to change those filters, they are life time filters and so not need to be changed, usually they are located in the fuel tank, but if the filter is located in the engine compartment, then that is changeable, and it is not hard to change them, all you need is three wrenches, sizes are different for every car, usually a 14mm, one 17mm and a 10mm will do, and you have to be able to get to it, that is the hard part, and be careful the fuel system is pressurized always, make sure to open the fuel line slowly and let the pressurized fuel drain first, then you could open the line and change the filter, good luck

Q: How do I remove the cabin air filter on a 2003 Honda Odyssey?

A: Your cabin air filter is behind the glove box. you have to take out the glove box and the glove box frame to get to the filter. If the filter has not been changed before you will also have to remove the plastic cross brace to get the filter out. here's the instructions If the glove box swings down without any support, the hinges can be overextended and damaged. To prevent damage to the glove box hinge, use a piece of foam or a bundle of shop towels to support it. 1.While holding the glove box remove the glove box stops—one each side there are tabs that pull out to release the stops. 2.Remove the bolts, then remove the glove box 3. Cut the plastic cross brace in the glove box opening with diagonal cutters in the area shown (on each end), and discard it. The plastic cross brace is at the lower rail and runs parallel to the lower dash opening. You may not have to do this if you have had the filter replaced before 4. Remove the bolts, the screws and the glove box frame—this is the lower rail of the glove box opening. 5.Remove the filter lid from the evaporator case. This is the vertical cover that has the filter behind it then pull out the dust and pollen filter (B). 6. Install the filter in the reverse order of removal. Make sure that there is no air leaking out of the evaporator. 7. Install the glove box frame and glove box in the reverse order of removal. hope that helps

Q: what is the proper tire pressure for Honda Odyssey 2003?
what is the proper tire pressure for Honda Odyssey 2003, and what should be the front wheels and the rear wheels.

A: Check the inside of the driver's door (the part you can only see when you open it), it should say on a sticker there. Also, check the tires themselves. It should also say on them what the pressure should be. My wife drives an '03 Odyssey, and the tires have a different pressure than the door, since the tires are not original. In that case, I went with the recommendation of the tire itself.

Q: 2003 Honda Odyssey check engine light?
I have an 03 Honda Odyssey with 98K miles on it. Yesterday the check engine light came on and today when I drove it I noticed that it revved a lot before shifting into the next gear. And a couple of times after stopping at a light or a stop sign it wouldn't go when I stepped on the accelerator. It just sounds like the wheels are spinning but it doesn't want to go. Any clues? I really don't want to replace a transmission right now. Someone please tell me that's not what it is!

A: call your local delership-this van will need a trans. however,it might be covered under a warranty extension for certain vin#s.these vans are well known for having a/t codes that require replacement and american honda jas recognized this problem. if not under warranty a reman from the dealership will run approx.4000 dollars! hopefully it will fall within the affected vins.they can run it over the phone.if under warranty, you will pay nothing, even if you are not the original owner as long as it is registered to you at motor vehicle dept. in your state.usually can be done in one day once the parts are recieved at the dealership. so call honda before you get too stressed! no action on your part will cost you a breakdown and a tow! the best action is replace the trans! by the way, there is no serviceable filter on this trans,or any honda trans-next one keep the fluid changed at intervals reccomended by your local dealer and ONLY use honda fluid in it! buy it from honda, not the autoparts store!aftermarket fluid WILL kill any honda trans!!!any addative will also kill it,since honda trannys are VERY sensetive to EVERYTHING!

Q: We have a 2003 honda odyssey and the air conditioning isn't working right?
We had to take it in about 2 months ago because the "something hose" and all the freon leaked out. Now it only blows cold air if we are driving, if we are stopped, it blows warm air. The faster we drive the colder it gets! We've also noticed a slight stutter once in a while when the air is on. Any suggestions what it might be, I don't want to go to the mechanic blind. We live in Florida, help!!

A: Doesn't sound like he put enough refrigerant in it. He may have skimped and replace the high pressure hose (with the cycle switch) with a cheap, homemade hose and jumpered the high pressure switch. I would take it to a different mechanic and if you find foul play, take the guy to court that messed up your car.

Q: How do you combine the 2003 Honda Odyssey's 2nd row seat?
How do you do it?

A: There's a lever on the side of the seat. Flip the lever, tilt the seat forward a bit, and slide it over until it's flush with the other seat. Lower the seat back down until it latches and you're done.

Q: where is the oil drain plug located on a 2003 Honda Odyssey?

A: If you are going to do it your self, It will be located on the lowest point on the oil pan to allow all the oil to drain out. You may have to jack it up or use ramps to gain access but you will probley have to do that anyways to get to the oil filter

Q: 2003 Honda Odyssey won't start when cold outside?
My Honday won't start when is cold outside. Once is warm outside no problem, starts right up and it doesn't cut off or anything. When is cold it cranks and the lights come up but it just won't start. I use the recomended gas per the owners book and the battery is brand new. What could it be?

A: Your car has many sensors that tell the computer to compensate for different temperatures, etc. One of these is likely bad, and not telling the computer the correct ambient air temperature. Take your car to a mechanic to have the computer scanned for codes. You may have to leave it on a night it will be cold so that they can replicate your problem on a cold morning. Good luck with it.
